That album and some others of the same division are responsible for what we have since then (and in the future) called HARD ROCK.

Specifically:

In 1968 in England
a band called Deep Purple was created. Founding member was Jon Lord - organ. The latter, together with Ritchie Blackmore - guitar, Rod Evans - Vocals, Nick Simper _ Bass and Ian Paice - drums created a group that after some concerts took this name from the favorite song of Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother. In the first three albums of the band things seemed a bit simple. The whole scene resembles a group of children playing with their new toys. They do a cover, a solo, but mostly to see themselves where they can reach. The vocals just complete each piece without being in any way bad. The only remarkable point is Jon Lord with his music quests. Every now and then is heard a creak foretelling what will follow.

Around 1969, Rod Evans and Nick Simper were replaced by Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, respectively, and the band closed their accounts with the past with "Concerto For Group And Orchestra".

And then comes "In Rock", which from the start made clear its intentions with that noisy opening of "Speed King". The sound is completely different from came before. Jon Lord was beginning to tweak any way he can the sound from the keys (playing with an electric substitute of «Hammond»
organ) that in addition to different sound it also enabled him to play the rhythmic part of the track allowing Richie Vlackmore to unfold his talent on the guitar. Lord did not just stay in the back-up role. Solos alternated from one to another starting "conversations" that evolved in the next albums (reaching the top in Machine Head), establishing them among the great virtuosos of rock.

Of course we have the main vocals by Ian Gillan who essentially plays the role of the fifth instrument in the band, because let's be honest the lyrics were never among the strengths of the band. No need to say more, I think anyone who remembers
Child In Time understands immediately what Ian Gillan means.

Other elements:

The cover is obviously inspired by  Mount Rushmore . The line (from left to right) shows Ian Gillan, Richie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Paice .

Characteristic tracks: Speed King, Child In Time, Into The Fire, Black Night. The latter is not included in the original album but was only released as a single. Later was released along with the rest of the album in an anniversary reissue of the 25 years since the first release of the album.

In Rock reached # 4 in UK Charts and stayed on them for months.

Involved in some songs as an engineer was Martin Birch later best known for producing Rainbow, Black Sabbath and of course Iron Maiden.

The song "Hard Lovin' Man" is dedicated to him.

Production is signed by
Deep Purple themselves.

The dismantling of the gang has just began ...
