The Drums - The Drums

The first complete work by the Drums is worth noticing. Still, I like to believe that their next step will have something different. They need a spark to transform them.

We met the Drums last year with their really good EP Summertime! The hype around them was intense and spread even further as it became known that they are enjoyable at their live performances. Their singer, Jonathan Pierce, is restless on stage and this has been  confirmed by the mixgrill correspondents at Primavera. Watch the video here

The band from Brooklyn released its homonym debut early last month. The
album includes two songs from the EP Summertime, Let’s go surfing and Down by the water. There is also their third single Best friend, as well as the more recent Forever and ever Amen. In It will all end in tears, Me and the moon, I need fun in my life, Skippin’ town and The future the baseline is strongly reminiscent of Peter Hook. Of course, in the rest songs the spirit of the great Manchester band is also apparent….

In the happy surf Let’s go surfing, the
Drums song that is most popular so far, Jonathan Pierce sings  “Oh momma, I wanna go surfing / oh momma, I don’t care about nothing”. In Down by the water -  no relation to the awesome song by PJ Harvey back in the 90s -  it sounds like the Shangri – Las are recording for Factory, as I read. And there are more influences from the distant past. In Book of stories, the production could be by Phil Spector, as the sound is reminiscent of Wall of sound. Regarding the influences of the Drums, a lot have been mentioned and filed, such as Echo and the bunnymen, Cure, Belle and Sebastian, and also Manic Street Preachers.

The first complete work by the Drums, without being a historic debut, is worth noticing. Still, I like to believe that their next step will have something different from what they have laready given out. Besides, sometimes the enthusiasm of the youth is not enough and repetition is wearing bands out. The Drums need a spark to transform them.
