Saturday, March the 19th 2011. Fuzz puts on its best, for the second appearance of the Paradise Lost. The way to their show was paved by our own Sorrowful Angels.
It was around 20:30 when we entered the venue and immediately Sorrowful Angels came out. The most of the audience had already come, so they would play with a lot of people. Their presence was explosive, very melodic and hard, really a killing combination. They presented pieces from their first work 'Ship In Your Trip' and their new 'Omens'. The band gave it all, were in high spirits, people liked them like crazy, and generally I think the selection of Lost to open this event was absolutely right. In the first two to three tracks the sound was not good in terms of not hearing clearly a solo (quite stuffy) which eventually was corrected. Also, apart from their own tracks they played us a cover by Apoptygma Berzerk. They closed with their own Denial, playing thus an hour, and left, leaving a very happy audience, who applauded warmly, ready to welcome Paradise Lost.
After the standard "set up", sound check etc., the guys from England popped. Chaos! The Draconian Times started. Introduction with keys and Enchantment! Sound was killing good and experienced Paradise Lost with the front man Nick Holmes, were on stage to sweep everything up. People, almost everyone sang the lyrics, lived all the moments of the project Draconian Times.
Concluding the first part, Holmes said good evening and asked us who attended the previous day and there were many who shouted that they were present. And with British humor, just confirmed that they will play the same (as if we did not know that they would play the entire Draconian). He then continued with the classic English style 'next track should be the Hallowed Land'. And indeed it was!
Without saying much Draconian Times was performed piece by piece, step by step, like a play. The time was passing by so pleasantly that no one really wanted it to finish this album. Everything was magical.
Paradise Lost finished the first part of their set, leaving us, as expected, with the best impressions. After all, the reason we attended was not just to see them live but Draconian Times itself. And they come back for encore. Actually 2 encores. A four-piece and a two. In the foursome we heard the Faith divide us-Death unite us, Mystify, The Enemy and Say just words. In the second Embers fire and One second. The encore was differentiated from the previous day's appearance, as they played (with the exception of Faith ..., One second and Say just words) the Sweetness, True Belief and As I Die . Here, I want to comment on the song selection of the second part of their appearances . The rich discography of the group allows for a multitude of options in pieces. It's not fair, then, when demanding in 6 pieces to satisfy all your audience. The author specifically would like to hear only pieces of the records Shades of God and Icon. But this is not entirely possible. After all, what the Lost came to do, did it brilliantly. Whatever extras were played left none disappointed, especially on mood and performance.
The Draconian Times is, without exaggeration, really leading synthetic time of the group while it is within best Goth / doom metal albums of all time. I feel very honored to hear this work live and with 2 appearances in Athens and one in Thessaloniki, having in mind that this show included (apart from Greece), the following cities: Utrecht, Bochum, London, Paris!
We expect a corresponding follow up by the British, and to enjoy them once again live as soon as possible.
PS: I am curious however to hear the encore of Thessaloniki!
