Bloc Party

That's Entertainment - 2005

Bloc Party
The rise of the British rock scene continues. A year after the excellent debut of Franz Ferdinand, it is the turn of Bloc Party to steal the limelight with their first full-length "Silent Alarm". They are influenced from the late '70s - early '80s post-punk sound, when bands like Gang Of Four mixed angsty punk riffs with dance bass-lines to deliver socio-political commentary while making you dance. Bloc Party take that sound and attitude and update it for a 21st century world, where the issues might be different but the existential angst remains the same.

LCD SoundsystemFranz Ferdinand consolidated their position as one of the top UK acts of the decade with their sophomore LP, while another example of the rise of UK's rock shares is "Cuts aross the land", the promising full-length debut of The Duke Spirit. Our list wouldn't be complete without the latest offering from The Fall as their 2005 release "Fall heads roll" is one of their best for the 00's. Further proof of the continuing influence of Mark E Smith on today's music is the stunning debut of New York's LCD Soundsystem. DFA's best act combined masterfully dance beats and punk attitude, while James Murphy's "singing" is reminiscent of the unique speak-sing style of M.E.Smith.

Other great releases of the year include Spoon's "Gimme fiction" and The Decemberists' "Picaresque", perhaps the finest moment for both bands. We also had the fiery punk of 50 Foot Wave, who are a slightly modified version of Throwing Muses, the blues-punk explosion of The Kills, the two very different but equally exciting albums of Bright Eyes and Sufjan Stevens' spectacular tribute to Illinois.
