Songs have always been and will always be covered... But what is it that makes a song worth noticing when it passes on to the hands of another artist, different from its creator? A simple approach would say that a cover is worthy when the new creator has something different to say and sometimes to pay respect to the original.

Inspiral Carpets, besides being one of my favorite 90s bands, have recorded some of the most remarkable covers, which have not been received by great audiences though, bringing the songs to their personal style. One of the Peel's sessions in 1989 on a multi-colour vinyl, included the cover of Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones.

The Flaming Lips covered the undoubted all time classic by Kylie, Can’t get you out of my head in 2002. So did Tricky in his latest album, Knowle west boy with Slow by the same singer and in this TAPE you can find it in a drum 'n' bass remix by Utah Jazz. The Sonic Youth chose Madonna's real surname to christen their side project, Ciccone Youth and pay respect to Addicted to love by the late Robert Palmer. Another Sonic Youth cover that stuck to my mind is that of Superstar by the Carpenters and in the song's video  the members of the band shine in their costumes but the eye is captured, as always, by Kim and her red dress! One of the few covers by the Pixies, is Evil hearted you by the Yardbirds as a b side to Planet of sound.

A personal choice for very special reasons is Interlude in which two of the greatest voices ever met, Morrissey and Siouxsie, to cover the homonym song by Timi Yuro back in 1968. Rumor has it that they argued really bad during the recording and in the TAPE (I did it) My way you can find a rare demo edition where Moz performs solo.

Listening to the cover by Saint Etienne for Only love can break your heart, it is hard to believe that the original belongs to Neil Young. Roger Waters is said to have congratulated the Scissor Sisters when he heard their cover for Comfortably numb. The Carter USM have also covered many songs with success: Rent, Panic, Trouble, Another brick in the wall, but the most popular is probably for This is how it feels by the Inspiral Carpets. We have been badly shoved in the indie clubs back in the 90’s αlistening to this song…

Jealous guy as covered by the Roxy Music became a great success in 1981 just after the murder of John Lennon. The Nine inch nails could not have dreamed when recording Hurt that a few years later it would be covered by the man in black, Johnny Cash, just before the end of his  hectic life, in one of the most heart-breaking performances we have ever heard!

A special reference should also be made to the opening song of today's TAPE, after which it is entitled, (I did it) My Way. Sid Vicious did not know all the lyrics when he was recording, so he follows his own devices...
