Without the weather reminding us, December came today and we're already counting days to the end of the year and decade. Like every year, December 1st is World Day AIDS.
Many events are held each year around the world to remind us that thousands of people die annually from this the great disease. Of course the musicians are active in this and for years have been created many songs that are related with AIDS. But there are some songs, that are not related to AIDS, but are known from the film, for example, to which they're soundtrack.
We gathered some of the songs associated one one way or another with AIDS and present to you the following list:
I 'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN - Neneh Cherry ( listen here )
The song belongs to Cole Porter and sung for the first time by Frank Sinatra in 1956. This interpretation by Neneh Cherry opens one of the most successful collections, which have been created for AIDS, "Red Hot + Blue". The latter was released in 1990 by the "Red Hot Organization" and contains songs of Cole Porter. This is one of the first major contributions by music in the fight against AIDS.
STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA - Bruce Springsteen ( listen here )
The song was recorded in July 1993 for the film "Philadelphia", which starred Tom Hanks, as a man suffering from AIDS and trying to prove that his company fired him for that reason. An incredible film given the time, which shows the situation as it really was. The song was not created for AIDS, but because of the film is placed on this list.
HOLD ON - Sarah McLachlan ( listen here )
Sarah McLachlan created this song, when she saw a documentary about a couple from Canada, where the woman discovered that her partner had AIDS and decided to stay and fight the disease with him. They stayed together, got married and after a few years her husband died. The song was created in 2008.
THE SLIM - Sugar
The "Slim" is the debut album of Bob Mould's band "Copper Blue", which was released in 1992. The lyrics of the song refer to the emotions you feel when you lose one of your own to AIDS.
LET'S TALK ABOUT AIDS - Salt-n-Peppa ( listen here )
The R n B trio released in 1991 a little different version of their great success "Let's talk about sex".
IN THIS LIFE - Madonna ( listen here )
"In this life" is in one of the best albums by Madonna, "Erotica"(1992) and talks about a friend who died from this disease.
TOGETHER AGAIN - Janet Jackson (listen here )
The song belongs to "Velvet Rope" in 1997 and was created by Janet for her friends, who have the disease. The first run was a ballad, but eventually you will find the dance performance in the album.
PLAGUE MASS - Diamanda Galas ( hear it here )
In 1989, in her trilogy of "Masque of the Red Death Trilogy: The Divine Punishment & Saint of the Pit/You Must Be Certain of the Devil" Diamanda Galas attacked the Catholic Church for its stance on AIDS. When she started the production of the trilogy, her brother Philip-Dimitri Galás was diagnosed with AIDS. During the recordings Galas had a relative tattoo in her knuckles. Her brother died before the release of the trilogy.
