Yesterday evening, the very dear to the Greek music audience, jazz drummer Steve Reid died. Reid was suffering from cancer and died at 66 years old.

Steve Reid began playing drums professionally at age 16 as a member of the Apollo Theater's band, with whom he participated in the recording of "Dancing in the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas, under the guidance of Quincy Jones.

In 1969 he was arrested as a conscientious objector because of his refusal to be involved in the Vietnam War.

In his career he collaborated with great jazz and soul musicians such as James Brown, Miles Davis, Sun Ra and Fela Kuti.

He released several albums with various projects (Steve Reid Trio, Steve Reid Quartet, Steve Reid Ensemble), while in recent years he has released four records with Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet ("The Exchange Session Vol.1" and "Vol.2" in 2006, "Tongues" in 2007 and "NYC" in 2008).

HebdenandReid Kieran Hebden said about the death of Steve Reid: «Steve one of my great friends and the most wonderful musician I have ever encountered. The music and adventures we shared have been some of the most happy and meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. A true inspiration.  He lived a great life and gave us incredible music.  I’ll miss him forever.»

In Greece we had the pleasure to see him play live twice with Kieran Hebden, in 2006 in a crowded House of Art and more recently in Synch Festival 2008.
