The completely one-dimensional, challenging, almost unhealthy post-punk debut dedicated to style, which includes hair and costumes, rather than the essential: music, is gone here, giving the position to a lacy goth-punk hybrid, quite melodic, sometimes lurid, with Geoff Barrows of Portishead in production and puts decisively his stamp (and tons of audio layers) in shaping the sound of the band, which has literally transformed from almost daunting to this haunted and for my ears this is definitely progress.
Obvious are the influences, My Bloody Valentine , Psychedelic Furs, Joy Division, Jesus & Mary Chain, Neu! are immediately perceived, the vocals, which are always needed , «shout» Bauhaus , are however elegant, without excesses and staginess and no showing of, the guitarist is atuned to the guitar style of Kevin Shields .
Fine synths and psychedelic pandemonium in " Three Decades ", raw feedback wrapped in shoegaze cloak in the wonderful " Scarlet Fields ", Jesus & Mary Chain call "here" at " Who Can Say " and then somewhere in the middle become Ronnetes !, the Spiritualized will be jealous of the dirty little melody in " I Only Think Of You ", a seven minute ode to lost love , but better than anything else the " Sea Within A Sea ", an alluring psychedelic festival spreading gradually, with sharp, winding keys slowly dwindling with the album, here the contribution of Barrows is so noticeable, it's enough to hear the keys in "The Rip" from last years Third of Portishead and understand what happens with the keys here as well, after the first four minutes.
So, a giant step forward forHorrors, who spread their perfect palette using a wonderful collage of influences, putting aside the usual trap of pot-pouri and transforming them into something modern and vibrant.
