As we get on in autumn and as the duration of the day decreases constantly, we take a look at songs that speak of the dark, making it sometimes seem less dangerous or scary, but always majestic and mysterious.



1. The Dark Is Rising - Mercury Rev
(Jonathan Donahue-Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak-Jeff Mercel)
The fifth album from American Buffalo, All Is Dream ( 2001), opens with this impressive piece. Symphonic kresenta alternating with low-key piano verses, creating atmosphere that owes much to both psychedelia and the classical past.

2. My Dark Life - Elvis Costello

Sounds incredible, but this great song was recorded within 14 hours to be included on the album Songs In The Key X set associated with the television series The X-Files .Costello plays all instruments (guitar, keyboards, bass) and singing while Brian Eno attends to the sound and production. Unique in  composition, one to swallow literally. If you have not heard it yet, do it now!

3. Not Dark Yet - Bob Dylan

In 1997, Dylan was able to regain, after several years, the musician himself with the help of Daniel Lanois who made the production of the 30th studio album , Time Out Of Mind. This song finds the old-Zimmerman realize that he enters the last stage of life, which combined with the magical sound of Lanois, brings tears to the eyes ...

4. Even In The Darkest Hour - Jay-Jay Johanson

The Tattoo (1998) is the second album by Swede Johanson and contains this superb track, which became well known in our country through television advertising known wafer. 6. Darkness On The Edge of Town

The namesake of the album track was selected for closure and a mid-tempo sample of Boss's songwriter, with a very strong chorus. «... I'll pay the cost / For wanting things that can only be found / In the darkness on the edge of town» .

7. Beware Of Darkness - George Harrison

The huge artistic and commercial success enjoyed by Harrison in the triple album All Things Must Pass , 1970, surprised many but not those who knew of his great talent (see While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes The Sun). By Phil Spector production and special guests (Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston among others) makes up an impressive ballad.

8. My Dark Hour - The Steve Miller Band

Steve Miller was recording the album Brave New World in 1969, when he found himself suddenly being the host in the studio of Paul McCartney, who had just fought with the other Beatles on economic issues. In My Dark Hour was recorded just one night and Macca, referred to as Paul Ramon in the credits, participated with vocals, drums and bass.

9. My Dark Star - Suede

Here we are dealing with a b-side of single Stay Together since 1994. A mid-tempo ballad with characteristic vocals of Anderson, the piece probably wronged by fate that the band reserved it. Fortunately, it can be found in the collection Sci-Fi Lullabies, which is full of songs such cases.

10. Home Before Dark - Neil Diamond

With a stripped from arrangers tricks, smooth song chosen by the Diamond, pulls the curtain of the eponymous album, which brought them to # 1 in the charts and on both sides of the Atlantic. So smoothly, I arrange an appointment for next week ...
