Gimme 10: The rain

The rain always inspired artists. In today's column, I present a first choice of songs that have this natural phenomenon as theme, promising to continue with another one that will follow.

The transition from summer to autumn is becoming increasingly steep as the years pass. The first rains fell this year even before September entered, reminding us that the climate is no longer as we knew it. Considerations about the matter being put drove me to the library of my songs, searching songs on rain to find out quite a few - this is obviously a natural phenomenon that will always inspire artists. Promising to follow with another one, I present a first choice from what I discovered.

1. See The Sky About To Rain - Neil Young
(Neil Young)
The album On The Beach was released in 1974 and has not been very well received neither by critics nor from fans, so it was find out of circulation for many years. Meanwhile, everyone changed their minds and demanded the release of a cd. Songs like this, as hastily as they were recorded then, it was difficult to remain in obscurity.

2. The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
(Jimmy Page-Robert Plant)
Once George Harrison, speaking to John Bonham, commented on the fact that Zeppelin did not ever write ballads. This remark made Page and Plant to write this unusual style for the piece, using the first two chords of Something in the introduction, as a tribute to the former Beetle. It was included in the album the Houses Of The Holy in 1973.

3. Wash In The Rain - The Bees
(Kris Birkin-Paul Batler-Michael Clevett-Warren Hampshire-Aaron Fletcher-Tim Parkin-Julian Batley)
Another excellent example of British talent from the island Wight. Major rhythmic and full of references to '60s and uploaded, but the "minore" lyrics. From the excellent second album, Free The Bees (2004).

4. Black Summer Rain - Eric Clapton
(Eric Clapton)
Clapton was so impressed by the Music From Big Pink of The Band asked them to join them. The dream to work with them was brought to the sessions for No Reason To Cry , 1976, which involved several members of the band. In that drive there and this leisurely piece with the beautiful vocals of Yvonne Elliman.

5. Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival
(John Fogerty)
John Fogerty did not enjoy the fact that critics mentioned the band in a group of 'bubble gum pop' and designed the Pendulum (1970) in response. It has done no bad judging by this track, 40 years later, considered a classic and still heard on the radio.

6. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan
(Bob Dylan)
Although written earlier, this monumental song was associated by many with the Cuban missile crisis and fears of a potential nuclear holocaust. This is one of the best protest songs ever written and one of the pearls of the first season of Dylan. From The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in 1963.

7. Ain't Gonna Rain Anymore - Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
(Nick Cave)
The Let Love In was the 8th album King Ink and the gang and has been very successful. Feature is particularly the orchestrations worked under the supervision of Tony Cohen and a representative sample is given the choice to film, claustrophobic atmosphere.

8. Only Happy When It Rains - Garbage
(Shirley Manson-Steve Markes-Duke Erikson-Butch Vig)
Garbage's debut was the most successful work and broke the funds in the mid-nineties with the alloy pop, rock, and Tripp-hop elektronika that characterizes it. The voice of Shirley Manson was at its best, having to tread on the impeccable production of Butch Vig and acoustical plethora of sounds of other members of the band. The rest was not as good, but songs like this will remind us forever of the standard set by them.

9. Driving Rain - Paul McCartney
(Paul McCartney)
For the recording of the eponymous album of 2001, Macca has worked with musicians and producers who were several years younger, so the overall production sounded very spirited and muscular and the songs often lead to long jamming. One of the best tracks on the record is, which combines comfort with the pop sensibility of the designer with powerful drums, 'sharp' guitars and electronic touches.

10. Ocean Rain - Echo And The Bunnymen
(Will Sergeant-Ian McCulloch-Les Pattinson-Pete de Freitas)
The Ocean Rain of 1984 is the time of their best work, for Ian McCulloch and his band. This is an album that is dotted with strings and intricate guitar ornaments and governed by a haunted atmosphere. The namesake, majestic piece of the curtain closes the record and the current column ...
