Gimme 10: Heaven

Heaven is maybe more that a dreamy place: it is rather a state of mind. Today we will get there, flying with the wings the songs put on our shoulders.

Heaven is maybe more that a dreamy place: it is rather a state of mind. Whatever the case may be, today we will get there, flying with the wings the songs put on our shoulders.

1. Heaven That I’m Making – Crowded House

(Neil Finn)
A track on the popular melodic style of the Crowded House from the band's fofth album, Time On Earth (2007), which reunited them after 11 years of absence.

2. Made In Heaven – Queen

(Freddie Mercury)
Keeping the vocals by the late Mercury from the performance in his solo album, Mr. Bad Guy (1985), the rest of the Queen made up a new instrumentation that matches the band's style and included the result in the homonym album in 1995.

3. Stairway To Heaven – Led Zeppelin

(Jimmy Page-Robert Plant)
Tones of ink have been used to write about this epic song from the fourth studio album by the Led Zeppelin – only few can be added. For sure, it is one of the best cooked rock plates.

4. Heaven On A Sunday – Paul McCartney

(Paul McCartney)
The album Flaming Pie (1997), coming after the Anthology project by the Beatles, found McCartney in great shape, inspired by the high standards of his old group. In this song he also exchanges some guitar riffs with his son, James.

5. Heaven On Their Minds – Murray Head

(Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice)
Judas speaks up to Jesus Christ in this piece from the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, which in 1970 scandalized the faithful Christians and excited most of the rest.

6. All That Heaven Will Allow – Bruce Springsteen

(Bruce Springsteen)
The "dark" Tunnel Of Love (1987) came after the great success of Born In The U.S.A. (1984) and deals a lot with the Boss's divorce from his first wife, Julianne Phillips. This song is a mid-tempo with a more optimistic mood.

7. This Heaven – David Gilmour
(David Gimour-Polly Samson)
A selection from the fourth solo album by the great guitarist of the Pink Floyd which was released in 2006 entitled On An Island. A somng written along with his wife, writer and journalist, Polly Samson.

8. Tears In Heaven – Eric Clapton

(Eric Clapton-Will Jennings)
The tragic death of his 4-year old son Conor, who fell off the 53rd floor οf a building in New York, made Clapton write this beautiful, moving song. It was initially included in the soundtrack of the film Rush (1991) by Lili Fini Zanuck, while it can also be found in the album Unplugged (1992).

9. As Heaven Is Wide – Garbage

(Shirley Manson-Duke Erikson-Steve Marker-Butch Vig)
The debut of the Americans Garbage in 1995 was explosive and came with a huge commercial and artistic success. Combining electric guitars with electronic rhythm boxes, like in this song, the great gang of four with Shirley Manson στα φωνητικά και τον Butch Vig managing the production in a masterly manner, showed here its immense potential.

10. Heaven Is A Truck – Pavement

(Stephen Malkmus-Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg)
With their second album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), the Americans Pavement gave up on the hardcore lo-fi practice of their debut, Slanted And Enchanted (1992), presenting several "easier" songs. One of them is this one, dominated by guitars and piano.
